Google: We’re giving you more time to get rid of the classic Google Sites


Google will give ‘classic’ Google Sites users an extra six months to migrate to the new Google Sites.

Google has postponed the deadline to move from the classic Google Sites product from its previous target of June 1, 2022 to December 1, 2022, after which users will no longer be able to edit any remaining Classic Sites. in the user’s domain.

From January 1, 2023, users will not be able to view Classic Sites unless they are converted to the new Google Sites, according to the Google Workspace Update blog.

Google revamped the design of Google Sites in 2016. Web apps are used to deliver content within an enterprise. Last November it extend the migration period lasts about half a year to mid-2022.

Google doesn’t explain why it’s extending the deadline but is encouraging end users and admins to use it Classic Website Manager to complete the move and convert each classic Sites into new Google Sites before December 1, 2022.

After January 1, 2023, Google will replace each remaining Classic Site with the Takeout archive and will “attempt to convert each Classic Site to a new Site.”

It encourages users review their domain settings by January 1, 2023 to ensure a successful migration.

Users will be notified once all sites on a domain have been migrated, but the process can take months, depending on the number and complexity of the sites. Once migrated, Classic Sites will no longer be available.

Google recommends that users create an archive of Classic Sites in Classic Sites Manager. Settings also work differently in new sites, so users need to check that they’re sharing with the right audience before publishing.

The new Timeline only applies to Google Workspace users and G Suite Basic and Business customers.
