Good chance of seeing the aurora borealis tonight in northern Washington state
A moderate solar storm has the potential to produce auroras extending south into Washington State tonight and tomorrow night.
In fact, last night there was a pretty nice aurora display over northwest Washington, recorded by Greg Johnson of Skunk Bay Weather (on the northern tip of the Kitsap Peninsula). Check it out below!
The current Kp point, a measure of solar activity, was as high as 5 a few hours ago, enough to push the aurora south into the northern United States
The NOAA Space Weather Center’s final forecast shows southern aurora sightings reaching Olympia this evening (see below).

We will also have the advantage of clear skies in most of the area (see satellite image shown below at 7pm); many of the clouds in the image will fade overnight as the Earth’s surface cools.
