WASHINGTON – Synthetic engine on Sunday said it had agreed to recognize California’s jurisdiction over car bookings emission standards under the Clean Air Act.
The move will make the Detroit automaker eligible to buy California’s government fleet of vehicles, GM speak.
The automaker pledged to recognize California’s jurisdiction in a letter to California Governor Gavin Newsom. GM said in the letter it is “committed to complying with California regulations.”
At moment later Joe Biden elected president, GM in November 2020 reversed itself and no longer supported the then Trump administration’s effort to ban California from establishing emissions Rule.
“GM is joining California in the fight for clean air and emissions reduction as part of the company’s pursuit of a zero-emissions future,” Newsom said. “This agreement will help accelerate California’s leading national commitment to addressing the climate crisis.”
In January, GM announced plans to eliminate exhaust emissions from new light vehicles by 2035. In June, GM ramped up global spending on electric vehicles and self-driving car to $35 billion by 2025, up 30% from the previous forecast.
“We are committed to working with California to achieve a fairer transportation future,” said GM Omar Vargas, global director of public policy.
In November 2019, California said it plans to stop all purchases new car for state government fleets from GM, Toyota and other automakers backing former President Donald Trump in the fight against chimney emissions.
California says it bought $58.6 million in General Motors vehicles between 2016 and 2018.

In July, 16 Republican state attorneys general urged the EPA to refuse to restore California’s jurisdiction. “Golden Bang is not a golden child,” they wrote.
GM previously backed total emissions cuts in California’s 2019 agreement with rivals Ford Engine, Volkswagen, Honda’s motobike and others, but has asked the Biden administration to give automakers more flexibility to achieve its carbon reduction goals.
California plans to ban the sale of new gasoline-powered passenger vehicles starting in 2035, a step the Biden administration declined to confirm. Biden has called for 50% of new cars sold by 2030 to be electric or dip into the mixture.
Last month, EPA finalized new vehicle emissions requirements by 2026, this will reverse Trump’s move back to cutting auto pollution and will accelerate the US’s shift to more tram.
