Earlier this year, I reviewed Garmin inReach Mini 2, using it for two-way communication with my family on hiking and fishing trips in Colorado and Washington. Thankfully, I don’t need to use it for an SOS emergency, but always wondered how often to use Garmin devices for such incidents.
Garmin has reported that it has support over 10,000 SOS incidents with inReach equipment on all seven continents in more than 150 countries as of 2011. While mountain regions have a high number of SOS incidents, there are also reported hiking and biking SOS incidents. in many different cities. Medical emergencies and injuries account for nearly 50% of SOS calls.
The top five activities people engage in when activating SOS services include driving, motorcycling, hiking, climbing, and boating. It is interesting to see that almost 20% of calls are made by a good Samaritan who has a Garmin inReach and can use it to assist others. Look for those inReach devices the next time you hike if you don’t already own one.
