Gervonta Davis did more than just deliver an impressive win over Ryan Garcia on April 22 in Las Vegas.
“Tank” and Garcia created one of the biggest events of the past few years, which hardcore Davis inadvertently ended with another memorable knockout.
The fight has generated a remarkable amount of buzz considering the fact that both men are still on the upswing. And not a single Davis fan was disappointed.
Davis (29-0.27 KOs) knocked out Garcia (23-1.19 KOs) in Round 2, which is just a preview of what’s to come. He controlled the next many rounds, disrupting everything Garcia tried to do.
And then Davis dropped the boom, a gut-wrenching shot that knocked out Garcia in Round 7 and left him so badly injured that he couldn’t continue.
A dominant performance in such a top-flight game has reinforced the view that the 28-year-old from Baltimore is either the new face of boxing or on his way there.
Then came some surprising news: The match reportedly generated around 1.2 million pay-per-view purchases, the highest for a sanctioned match since the match. Canelo Alvarez versus Gennadiy Golovin I in 2017 generated 1.3 million plays.
Davis-Garcia also created an estimated $22.8 million live portal at T-Mobile Arena, with an announced audience count of 20,842. Highest dollar figure in Nevada since Alvarez-Golovkin II, earning $24,473,500.
Fewer and fewer people question Davis’ abilities every time he fights. He doesn’t seem to have a clear weakness, which is why he can overwhelm one opponent after another.
And if there is any doubt about his influence in the sport, it melts into the arid desert air of Las Vegas.
Indeed, Davis had a great night in Las Vegas, which is why he’s Boxing Junkie’s Boxer of the Month for April 2023.
And he’s just getting started.
Davis is focusing on a showdown with one of the top 135-pound athletes, Devin Haney, Vasiliy Lomachenko and Shakur Stevenson. If Tank fights and defeats one or more of the above, he will have no doubt that he is a true superstar.
