George RR Martin was aware of dark spirits before working on the Elden ring
In a new interview with GameFromSoftware President and Elden Rings Director and screenwriter Hidetaka Miyazaki revealed that George RR Martin was familiar with the company’s work before making the project. In particular, he mentioned that the writer knew about Dark souls. He also discusses the kind of work the author did for the game. Not long after the reveal, FromSoftware noted that Martin would be working on its legend.

Well, I have some fond memories of those early discussions. Not so much about the content but just the general feelings that I told George Martin. He really knows about Dark souls Game. He knows about them and what they’re talking about, so that makes me happy. That gave me some motivation. I knew as soon as I talked to him, it was just obvious his skill and passion for the fantasy genre, and the game as well.
In addition to getting acquainted with the games, Miyazaki also explained more about Elden Rings work that George RR Martin did. He mentioned tasked him with working on the platform, and the platform for the game was designed to not “limit his creative output”. Miyazaki notes that working on the “historical element” gives him more freedom. He refers to the “back and forth” he had with the author as they built things up.
Elden Rings will release for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and PC on February 25, 2022.
