Gary Russell Jr confidently raised both arms in the air after finishing his bout against mandatory title challenger Mark Magsayo. However, while Russell Jr believed he was about to hear his name called a winner, he remained unconvinced when the final results were read aloud.
According to judge Lynne Carter, both Russell Jr and Magsayo fought to tie in their Showtime main event at the Borgata Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City. However, she was ultimately defeated by fellow judges Mark Consentino and Henry Eugene Grant, who each gave an identical score in favor of Magsayo, 115-113.
After revealing that the title reign of Russell Jr. ended unexpectedly, the residents of Maryland began to giggle. In what Russell Jr believes to be an entirely unilateral fight, he can only come to one conclusion as to why he was given a rough deal.
“Politics is a terrible mother,” Russell Jr said in a self-recorded video after his defeat. “I beat that boy at least ten rounds 9-3. I took ole boy to school. ”
As Russell Jr approaches his sixth defense of his WBC featherweight title, the former speed champion reveals he won’t be at his best. While he declined to reveal exactly what was bothering him, Russell Jr promised to go public with his bodily injury after the end of the bout.
However, while Russell Jr was on the mend, he unwittingly revealed his physical problems in the fourth round. During that time, Russell Jr winced in pain and grabbed his right arm. From there, he fought throughout their competition with only his left hand.
Although the former champ pointed out he had torn a tendon in his shoulder two weeks ago, he insists that even with one hand, he completely dominated Magsayo.
“I am a true dog at the end of the day. I was raising my arms like two weeks before camp. Still fighting and honestly, I’m way ahead of him, out of his school, boxing him with a f*cking mom arm. That’s what it is.”
