Fury’s ex-trainer Ben Davison claims Tyson is “not in the mood to fight anymore”
Ben Davison believes Tyson Fury is not in the mood to fight anymore and will retire to fight Anthony Joshua.
Davison, who previously faced off against former WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders, was at Newcastle with his charge being Pat McCormack.
McCormack, the Olympic silver medalist from Tokyo, fights for the second time as a professional on Saturday at the Vertu Motors Arena in the Northeast, as part of the supporting cast in the unseen clash. Josh Kelly’s WBO International super-super-championship with Lucas Bastida.
And Davison reckons the man last seen at Wembley Stadium in April when he stopped number one contender Dillian Whyte for six rounds to retain his title has yet to see anything. What to make him fancy.
While speaking to Boxing Social, the former WBC heavyweight champion coach said:
“I think people are complicating the Fury situation way too much.
“I think people think he’s trying to be smart when actually he’s being honest.”
Fury has recently confirmed plans are in the works for him to meet Hafthor Bjornsson in November during an exhibition fight, with a London stadium set to host a clash with former Game of Thrones star ‘Thor’, who made headlines with an exhibit of his own in March, beat his strong rival Eddie Hall twice to win by unanimous decision.
Davison continued:
“I don’t think he cares too much about anything but if [Anthony Joshua] won, it’s a fight that I think he’s going to beat again.
“I know he’s still going to train, but I just think people are looking at it too much.”
After the aforementioned win over Whyte, the ‘King of Gypsy’ said he would not rematch unless he fought Joshua – his British friend who he said he would fight for free – or current WBA Super, IBF, IBO and WBO champion Oleksandr Usyk.
By contrast, Fury had initially said that it would take $500 million to be brought to the table to lure him into retirement, with Usyk being on the hit list at the time.
Davison echoed the undefeated 33-year-old’s feelings:
“What he is saying is what it is and people are just complicating it.
“He’s not in the mood to fight anymore, there’s no one to spark his interest, he loves training, he’s happy to be in an exhibition, but if ‘AJ’ wins, he happy to do the fight with ‘AJ’.”
