Frustrated parrot uses human commands to silence barking dogs

Hearing a dog bark incessantly can be frustrating, especially if you’ve tried everything to train and redirect their behavior. However, noisy dogs not only annoy humans but can also annoy other animals. Most pets can’t express their displeasure with noisy dogs, but one parrot found a way to express his frustration.

In a hilarious video, a parrot asks his canine brothers to stop barking. The way he talks is very human, so he seems to think he is better than animals that can’t talk, like his canine siblings.

Parrot has barking disease

In the YouTube video, an African gray parrot named Otis is perched on a perch while its two canine siblings, Dugan and Murphy, bark in the background. Otis paused to process what was happening, but immediately, he seemed annoyed. The dogs kept barking as if something crazy had happened (like a dog walking past!), so Otis knew it was time to speak up.

Otis is about three years old and his owner, Brenda Griffiths from Ontario, says he has always been a talkative bird. So when he hears Dugan and Murphy bark, he often loudly tells them to “stop!”

“Our dogs always bark when there is a squirrel in the yard or activity at the front door,” says Griffiths.

In the video, Otis repeatedly tells the dogs to “stop” or “stop”. The more times he had to say it, the more frustrated he sounded.

Dogs refuse to listen to their feathered friend

No matter how many times Otis told the dogs to stop barking, nothing would change. They continued to bark as if they didn’t even hear him. Finally, Otis whistled to get the dogs’ attention before telling them to stop, but they still wouldn’t listen.

Finally, in the final seconds of the video, the barking stops. So Otis says “good boy” to reward the dogs for listening. The silly parrot seems to think he is controlling the dogs, not knowing that he is a pet just like them.

Parrots learn to speak by imitating what they hear from humans. The African Gray Parrot is said to be as smart as a 5-year-old while dogs are almost as smart as a 2.5-year-old. So Otis may have heard his mother tell the dogs to stop barking and then say “good boy” when they stopped. Which means that Otis is probably not really upset with his furry friends, but instead, he’s just learning from his human’s actions.
