Frontier cuts 14 routes, withdraws from 1 city in latest network overhaul

That’s not all growth for Frontier Airlines, as it has just quietly filed plans to withdraw from some markets.

The Denver-based carrier will cut 14 routes from its network and it will also end service to Rochester, New York on May 8, as first seen in the Cirium schedule and Ailevon data Pacific, and was later confirmed by a spokesperson for the airline.

You’ll find the full list of cutback routes at the end of this post, but Frontier doesn’t give a lot of details about these tweaks. The cut-off will take effect in just over a month at the earliest, and affected flights will be phased out gradually until May 10.

For its part, Frontier explains that “we periodically review and update our routes based on demand, seasonality, and other factors.” Aside from Rochester, Frontier still serves all other airports, as explained in the following statement: “We continue to service many destinations from these markets.”

ZACH GRIFF/THE POINT

Perhaps most surprising is that more than half of the route cuts were in new markets that were launched less than a year ago. In fact, the service from Minneapolis-St. Paul goes to the Phoenix launched in January, while flights from Fort Lauderdale to Chicago, Las Vegas and Phoenix It all started last November.

While Frontier has been very active about growing the network during the pandemic, some of the airline’s bets have clearly not paid off. The airline seemed to think it could stimulate traffic and attract existing passengers with discounted fares, but that doesn’t seem to have worked in all of the airline’s new markets.

Still, the risk of failure hasn’t stopped Frontier from participating in a massive expansion, which most recently included eight new routes to Puerto Rico. Following the launch of these new flights, Frontier will offer a total of 19 non-stop routes to the island, making the airline the largest carrier serving Puerto Rico by number of markets served.
