Weather director: Ukraine war could be ‘lucky’ for climate

By JAMEY KEATEN

GENEVA (AP) – The head of the UN weather agency says the war in Ukraine “could be considered a blessing” from a climate perspective as it is spurring development and investment in green energy. in the long term – even though fossil fuels are being used at a time of high demand today.

The comments from Petteri Taalas, secretary general of the World Meteorological Organization, come as the world is facing a shortfall in energy demand – in part due to economic sanctions on the greenhouses. Russia’s key oil and natural gas producers – and fossil fuel prices have risen.

That has led some countries to quickly turn to alternatives like coal. But rising prices for carbon-generating fuels like oil, gas and coal have also made higher-priced renewables like solar, wind and hydrothermal more competitive in the market. energy.

“Over a period of five to 10 years, it is clear that the war in Ukraine will accelerate our consumption of fossil energy and it is accelerating this green transition,” Taalas said.

“So we will invest more in renewable energy, energy efficient solutions, and some small-scale nuclear reactors that are likely to come online by 2030,” he said. as “part of the solution”.

“Therefore from a climate point of view, the war in Ukraine can be considered a blessing,‘ added Taalas.

From a “climate perspective”, there is no end to which “benefit” war can bring. I mean, why don’t we go further, and consider the possibility if the Ukraine war escalates into a global nuclear exchange.

A nuclear post-apocalyptic world will experience a range of climate benefits. Fossil fuel consumption will drop sharply, because most consumers will die and the destroyed infrastructure will not be able to sustain a significant amount of fossil fuels for consumption. There will even be a geoengineering benefit. Ash from nuclear explosions sent into the stratosphere will form a cooling blanket around Earth, reflecting some of the sunlight back into space before it has a chance to warm the planet.

Personally, I like to see things from a “human point of view”, where the Ukraine war was a horrible tragedy that resulted in the merciless death of 10,000 people caught up in the conflict, or the murder of civilians. Damage caused by missiles hitting homes, shopping malls, hospitals and schools. The “human perspective” in which people make misleading comments about how good the war is may not be suitable for jobs involving public relations. But maybe it’s just me.
