Jockey Manny Franco tested positive for COVID-19 January 4 and will stay in horseback riding until January 9, the New York Racing Association announced on January 5.
Franco did not experience symptoms and was actively tested because of standard contact tracing following the positive tests of riders Jorge Vargas Jr. and Jalon Samuel on December 31.
All members of the NYRA equestrian colony are vaccinated and follow established protocols. In addition, the horse racing zone at Aqueduct race track has been significantly altered to provide maximum physical distance and reduce density.
The NYRA follows the most up-to-date federal and state guidance on contact tracing, testing, mandatory isolation, and quarantine. Accordingly, Franco will be allowed to return to play on Sunday, if he remains asymptomatic.
COVID-19 cases are at record levels nationwide amid an increase largely attributed to the contagious Omicron variant. Scientists and doctors believe the Omicron variant is partially eliminating the vaccine’s ability to neutralize the virus, although vaccinated people may experience fewer symptoms after contracting COVID-19 .
More than 9,000 New Yorkers are currently hospitalized with COVID-19, New York Governor Kathy Hochul said on January 13, surpassing the increase in January 2021 and reaching levels not seen since May 2020 in this state.
As required by New York City, anyone wishing to enter the Aqueduct in any capacity must demonstrate proof of a COVID-19 vaccination. Masks are always required on NYRA property.
