Formula 1 introduces new indie sprint race format
FIA Formula 1 World Championship Introduced Saturday Sprint Race 2021originally called “Sprint Qualifiers” to distinguish it from the main race on Sunday. The new format is divisive and confusing for fans. Traditional qualifying is still held to determine the starting order for the sprint, but the results of the sprint will then establish the starting grid on Sunday and the sprint winner is scored. take a pole position. So F1 has now decided to make the sprint race a standalone event over a Grand Prix weekend.
In case you lost it:
Formula 1’s New Sprint Format will see Saturday’s practice scrapped in favor of a sprint-specific second qualifying session. Friday will still include a free practice session and qualifying for Sunday’s race. Saturday will be dedicated to Sprint. The day will open with the Sprint shootout, the sprint’s elimination session, and the Sprint itself. The new elimination session replaces Saturday’s free practice session. Sunday will not change.
The sprint shootout is a stripped-down version of the existing three-round knockout. This session won’t last half an hour, compared to an hour for a traditional qualifier. Rule state SQ1 is set to run for 12 minutes, SQ2 for 10 minutes, and SQ3 for 8 minutes. There will also be a mandate for tire compound usage. Teams will be required to use medium mixed tires in Q1 and Q2, and soft mixed tires in Q3.
The format changes reflect the sprint format used in MotoGP and are intended to encourage aggression on Saturday. The drivers only had their Sunday starting place left on the line in the sprint. Even so, grid penalties received during the sprint will apply on Sunday. New format coming out at This weekend, the Grand Prix of Azerbaijan.
