Ford CEO Jim Farley last month told investors that special variants like the Raptor share about 80% of their parts with regular models but have a 30% higher contribution margin, with “double capital efficiency”.

Ford expects the Raptor to account for about 10% of Ranger sales in the US, according to Gretchen Sauer, Ford’s director of pickup marketing.

“The Raptor will be the most advanced model in our Ranger lineup,” said Sauer. “It will increase our overall transaction price for Ranger.”

Ford declined to disclose the current average transaction price of the Ranger. Automotive research company Edmunds reported that it was around $41,300 last month.

The Ranger Raptor, powered by a 3.0-liter EcoBoost V6 engine, adds to Ford’s Raptor lineup that now includes the F-150 full-size pickup and SUV Bronco.

Ford is also increasing the starting price of standard Ranger models, which includes additional safety and technology features. Prices for the entry-level XL model will start at $34,160, up about 18 percent from $27,400 for the current model. Ranger Raptor increases the starting price for the most advanced version by 34%. Prices include mandatory destination fees.

Orders for the Ranger 2024 will begin this month, with the cars expected to arrive at dealerships starting late summer.

global pick up

While Ranger sales in the US pale in comparison to Ford’s Bigger F-Series Trucks, smaller pickup trucks are important to the Detroit automaker’s global sales. Ford manufactures vehicles at five different plants globally for sale in more than 180 markets.

The Ford brand sold more than 1 million pickup trucks globally by 2022, and the automaker says Ranger sales have more than doubled from a decade ago to more than 300,000 units last year. The Ranger ranks second in global sales behind the Toyota Hilux, according to industry data.

Jim Baumbick, Ford vice president of product development and quality, told CNBC: “The mission has always been to climb to No. 1. “We were clearly No. 2 globally and we set our sights on being number 1. entirely for the top spot on the podium.”

Ranger sales in the US fell about 40% last year, as the automaker faced supply chain issues and prioritized production of the Ford Bronco SUV, which sold well. more than triple by 2022 to 117,000 units.

Ranger vs Bronco

The Ranger and Bronco are both made at a factory in Michigan, which creates a sort of thrust in their respective manufacturing processes.

“Ford will try to decide at any given time which vehicles to build, but they have the flexibility to go back and forth,” said Stephanie Brinley, principal automotive analyst at S&P Global Mobility.

Baumbick said balancing production of the Ranger and Bronco at Ford’s Michigan Assembly Plant is something he’s been spending a lot of time working on.

“It’s a challenge. It’s a good problem. We have incredible demand on both the Bronco and Ranger sides,” he said. “As we launch the new Ranger, we’ll continually strike a balance between the two.”

The Ranger fits between Ford’s compact Maverick pickup and its larger F-150 and F-Series full-size trucks. This is the first time the Ranger has been redesigned since Ford launched the well-received Maverick pickup in 2021.

To help differentiate the pickup line, Ford added more capacity and power to the Ranger. It is also 2 inches wider and longer than the current generation truck.

The Ranger 2024 will come standard with a 2.3-liter turbocharged engine that makes 270 horsepower and 310 foot-pounds of torque. The 2.7-liter twin-turbo V6 currently offered in the F-150 and Bronco SUV will also be available. That engine makes 315 horsepower and 400 foot-pounds of torque.

The Ranger Raptor will come standard with a 3.0-liter EcoBoost V6 that is expected to produce a class-leading output of 405 horsepower and 430 foot-pounds of torque.

Bronco SUVs are being manufactured at Ford’s Michigan assembly plant, June 14, 2021.
