Florida driver gets upgraded by towbridge in video

If you’ve ever crossed a drawbridge and thought you didn’t want to be caught there while it was doing its thing, here’s a scary look at what that is like.

The video above shows a car crossing a bridge in Lantana, Fla., via the Intracoastal Waterway. The Honda fit almost cut across as the bridge started to go up and the car was lifted with it. As the situation continued, the driver opened the car door as if to jump out, but there was clearly a gap underneath that was big enough for him to fit through, so he dropped the idea. Finally, the bridge was raised up Fit out onto a flat and safe sidewalk. We had to hand it over to the driver for being so calm when he got out of the car. Incredibly, when the bridge stabilized back to where it was, he was able to drive away.

The county official told CBS12 that the bridge operator was a fired county employee. WPBF reported that the bridge operator relied only on the camera to view the bridge, not stepping out of the control booth, and did not see the vehicle.

This incident happened on October 21. But now it has emerged as part of a more recent tragedy. Video of the incident was released amid an investigation into The death of a 79-year-old woman. Carol Wright was crossing a drawbridge in West Palm Beach on her bike earlier this month when the bridge began to lift. She clung to the bridge’s railing for several minutes before falling to the concrete five or six stories below. The bridge tender is being investigated for negligence.
