If you think an outlet for the warmth of Cancun may be on the card for this coming winter, you should book your tickets when you get the window where airfares are getting cheaper; it happens often. Right now is one of those times.

There are currently several US cities from which you can fly to the popular destination Mexico for $250 or less round-trip. You’ll find some deals right after November, fast approaching, with more options after the start of the New Year.

We’ve noted round-trip airfares to Cancun (CUN) for around $250 or less. However, if you don’t see your city listed here, check prices from your home airport. There are many US cities that have round-trip tickets to Cancun available at prices above the price range we’ve flagged, including trips from Washington, DC, Dallas, Houston and Los Angeles.

Here are some of the options we like best:

  • Austin to Cancun for US$252.
  • Chicago to Cancun for $222 on SkyTeam Delta and Aeromexico combo.
  • Denver to Cancun for $251 on Aeromexico.
  • Fort Lauderdale to Cancun or $238 on JetBlue.
  • New York to Cancun for US$243.
  • St. Louis to Cancun for US$257.

Let’s first take a look at one of the shortest flights available for a low price: Austin Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) to Cancun. It was a nonstop flight lasting under two and a half hours on the trip south on American Airlines. This particular itinerary gets you on vacation right after the new year.

Some journeys involve connections somewhere. In fact, be sure to check how long your stay is before you book a particular itinerary. I’ve found options that seem great in several cities, but with over 10 hours of stopping at a US airport.

The more streamlined (but not quite) arrangement is more ideal in this itinerary. Departing from O’Hare International Airport (ORD), you’ll fly down to Cancun aboard SkyTeam and Mexico’s leading airline Nebulized. It was a relatively short, two-hour stop in Mexico City, before the last leg of the trip. On the way back, you’ll have an additional three-hour stopover in New York at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK).

In a lot of cases for these deals you trade convenience for the price, so it all depends on what you agree to.

Here’s the slightly simpler option: Direct flights from South Florida on JetBlue. For $238, you’ll get to Cancun mid-day, to spend the afternoon on the beach. Likewise, on your way home, you won’t depart until early afternoon, so you can enjoy your last few hours at your resort before heading to the airport.

Key point

Since prices to Cancun can fluctuate as with any destination, you want to make sure to book your flight when you can get the best deal, rather than paying $400 round-trip or more. Enjoy warm weather, a winter break on the books now by paying a much lower cost to get to Mexico and back.
