“Everybody likes a Texas cross right now, but you can’t just go and produce them overnight,” Calhoun said. “It took a long time to build up that inventory. The Stallions are represented with their 2-year-olds’ first crop of race winners Kentucky (Always Dream), Preakness (Cloud), Belmont Stakes (Tapwrit), Breeders’ Cup Classic (Accelerated) and Breeders’ Cup Sprint (Midnight Lute) as well as Mendelssohn, Connect, Army Mule and Mo Town 1st class winners.
Texas’s top stallions are also well represented, including Competitive Edge, whose offspring include recent graded stake winners Edgeway and Bob’s Edge. Other Texas stallions include Too Much Bling, Bradester and Eagle.
Clary Bloodstock is signing Dirty Bubbles and Bling, who’s Too Much Bling and doesn’t have the same mare (Miss Photogenic) as 12-time winner and Moneybag of the Year 2019 Texas Horse. Pike Racing is selling a stud bred from Louisiana by a Tier 1 Production Custom stallion to Carlos, who is not from the same mare (Sammy Van Ammy) as the Streak of Silver winner in Texas. Thoroughbred Futurity in 2021.
TTA sales manager Foster Bridewell said: “I think it’s a powerful family catalog. “It’s varied with a good variety. There’s a lot of excitement involved with racing in Texas at the moment, and that makes a lot of sense when it comes to our sales.”
The Benchmark Training Center of Quinlan, Texas has 36 horses entered. About half are registered Texans, including half-sister to the Texas champion Gold Pilot and the Pinky Ring Bling who won the shares as well as half-brother to the Texas champion and 10-time winner Ima Discreet Lady.
“There are a number of beautiful horses that have been cataloged,” said Taffy Jones, owner and trainer of Benchmark. “The pedigrees have gone up, the mares are better than they used to be. I think that’s all positive. And you’ll have a few more options about whether to breed stallions.
“Hopefully we can attract new buyers and there seems to be some excitement.”
Jones said the 2-year-old Texas Mixed Dog Association, and the 3-year-old Texas Mixed Dog Association, will begin next year at Sam Houston Race Park, providing traction for the auction. That was definitely a selling point last year for owner Carl R. Moore.
A Breeders’ Cup winner with Chamberlain Bridge in the 2010 Turf Sprint, Moore plays at the top of the sport but is also looking for horses that can compete in Association bet races. Texas Stallion Stakes as well as the Texas Stallion Stakes Series. He bought three horses in last year’s sale, including the Texas-bred Texas Thunder for $112,000 and the Streak of Silver for $95,000. “Everybody is excited about the future,” says Moore, from the Metroplex town of Kennedale. “The wallet is good. The competition is getting better. People are bringing their horses here to run. I think it looks very positive for the future. I love the sport. I think Texas for sure. in progress.”
Eddie Milligan, traditionally one of the top shippers of the sale under the Twin Oaks Thoroughbreds LLC banner, has 14 horses in the portfolio.
“I think the pricing will be similar to last year, maybe a little better,” said Milligan. “Yearlings are horribly expensive, and it looks like it could give 2-year-olds…. You get the likes of Carl Moore.
