Before Baylor midfielder Gerry Bohanon found a new home.
Bohanon announced on Sunday that he is moving in South Florida, where he will be given priority to start next season and have two qualifying seasons remaining. It marks a huge reception for coach Jeff Scott as he enters his third season as head coach of USF.
“I chose USF because I believe in that staff, I believe in the culture, I believe in the change coming,” he told ESPN in a text message. “I believe in the players, I believe in Tampa. That staff is the staff you want to play with, they’re going to give (you) everything they’ve got on and off the pitch.”
Bohanon has also visited Missouri since announcing his transfer from Baylor. He told ESPN that he also considers BYU, Georgia Tech, Liberty and Oklahoma. Bohanon was one of the breakout stars of the 2021 football season, as he scored a 10-2 goal as a starter for Baylor, leading the Bears through a star-studded season that included the Big 12 title and won the Sugar Bowl.
Bohanon’s entry into the NCAA transfer portal was a surprise, the by-product of a class move by Baylor coach Dave Aranda. Bohanon was beaten for the job starting this spring by substituting midfield Blake Shapen. Aranda told Bohanon he would be the backup in 2022, and by alerting him, Aranda gave Bohanon the option to enter the portal and try to find a job starting in the fifth season in college. learn.
Bohanon will have two qualifying seasons left for all players during the 2020 pandemic season. Bohanon made his decision shortly after returning from a visit to USF over the weekend.
“This is the place for me and I love every minute of it,” Bohanon told ESPN. “I’m excited for this team and staff and I’m ready to compete.”
