Chris Eubank Jr and Conor Benn have followed in their father’s footsteps in boxing, and are set to renew their historic rivalry by stepping into the ring together.
In The Face Off, hosted by Ade Oladipo, The fighter pair details the reactions from their father when the fight is first fought. It turned out that Eubank Sr didn’t want his son to fight. Not forever, just not yet.
“He [Senior] told not to fight. Don’t take it because it’s not the time. Wait a year, let’s get a few more wins, let him [Benn] earn a few more wins. Build the fight, build the hype and have it in a football stadium next year. This fight does it, and the rapid change we have now we can’t put it in a stadium. So his thing is to wait. “
Despite his reluctance at this stage, Eubank Sr will be the driving force fascinating clash. His son says that, although he doesn’t hate Benn, it is personal because of a family feud.
“It’s personal because of what happened in the past with fathers. The way his old man treated my father. Just being a kid and seeing what he [Senior] had to go through to deal with his ex. The pressure and mental suffering he goes through leads to their first fight. Wounds and watching my mother take care of him after their fights – he went to the hospital. His old man said that he hated my father. You hate my father? That makes it personal. I can’t let him [Conor] revenge for the loss of his father”.
Nigel Benn was knocked down in the first match against Eubank Sr. They met again three years later in 1993 in a non-stop regular competition that ended in a draw. Contrary to Eubank Sr, Benn is buzzing about his son’s war being announced, as Conor recounts.
“He [Nigel] Just can’t wait to come across here. Put yourself in their shoes – who would have thought their son would fight? Or already on the same level? Or the same generation? It had never been done before so my dad was just on the moon. He just said go out there and do the business. Do what you have to do. “
