Subaru adds Crosstrek Hybrid, leans on Toyota for electric vehicles
Subaru will rely on Toyota to produce three more electric crossovers through 2026, but first it will revive the Crosstrek Hybrid, Automotive news report.
The previous Crosstrek Hybrid was essentially a plug-in hybrid, borrowing powertrain components from Toyota. It was introduced for the 2014 model year and lasted for two generations before being discontinued after the 2023 model year.
Subaru Crosstrek 2023
The report says the new Crosstrek Hybrid will feature the same “next-generation hybrid system” as the outgoing model. Subaru Forester Hybrid 2026, coming next year. If the rumors are true, the Forester Hybrid line could also include a version with a charging port.
Subaru last summer has confirmed accelerated EV plans, includes four additional battery-electric models to be introduced by the end of 2028, with at least one of them to be produced in the US. We now know that three of them are based at Toyota. Subaru also made a commitment last year Tesla NACS charging port for electric vehicles in the future.
Toyota Kentucky Automobile Manufacturing
According to the report, one of the Subaru EVs will be a version of Toyota’s three-row electric SUV, rumored to be called the bZ5X, which is expected to be produced in Kentucky starting in 2025. This is one of Two such car models have been confirmed by Toyota to be produced in the US. ONE second three-row electric SUV is expected to be built in Indiana in 2026.
Subaru’s Solterra remains the company’s only electric vehicle, and it’s also based on the Toyota (which is a virtual twin of the Toyota bZ4X). Subaru introduced this feature for the 2023 model year, and the 2024 Subaru Solterra has faster charging capabilities as well as a hands-free driver assistance system at low speeds.
