Erickson Lubin is listed as 5 foot-9½ tall. Sebastian “Towering Inferno” Fundora is 6-5½ or 6-6, depending on the source. That’s a difference of at least 8 inches. Also, as you can imagine, Fundora has a much longer reach.
Will that be a problem for Lubin when they meet in a 12-round £154 match on Saturday in Las Vegas (Showtime)? He doesn’t care.
“We’re not underestimating anyone,” Lubin said in his final pre-match press conference, essentially a title remover. “He is a tall statue of a guy, but skill pays. We go into camp and make a game plan and then we execute on the night of the fight.
“He’s a good fighter, in good shape, but my skills will be the difference.”
And while no one is taller than Fundora (18-0-1, 12 KOs) in the junior middleweight, Lubin (24-1, 17 KOs) has faced opponents taller than him.
“I fought at the age of 15order fighting someone a few inches shorter than Fundora,” said Lubin, referring to Daniel Sandoval’s 6-1 scoreline. “I was in the ring with all kinds of people. I follow people roughly the same height as Fundora, including (6-1½) Jamontay Clark, who joined the camp with me. Height doesn’t mean much to me.
“I have dynamite in both hands. I believe that I have the ability to defeat everyone I have in the ring. I am here to win.”
And, finally, Fundora often doesn’t use its height and advantage. He likes to argue, which obviously worked for him.
He hinted during the press conference that fans will see much of the same in the fight against Lubin.
“I can guarantee this fight will be hell,” he said. “We are number one and number two [in the WBC rankings]. The winner will definitely play against the champion, so we will do our best. ”
