Elon Musk Sets Limits on Twitter, Claims “Getting Data” and “Manipulating the System”

Twitter has collapsed in slow motion ever since Elon Musk was forced (after he tried to walk away from a $44 billion deal) to buy the social media platform last October, and this weekend it appeared to be on the verge of collapse.

At first, the disintegration of the platform had ideological causes – for example, Musk’s decree that Twitter would start treating “transgender” as an obscene term. And sometimes it’s due to poor basic operations, such as vowing to make Twitter “the world’s most accurate source of real-time information” and then demanding payment for verification – which which most reliable reporters can’t and/or won’t do.

When the Twitter owner asks you [checking notes] “Step off the phone to see your friends and family,” you know something is wrong.

On Friday, users noticed that Twitter pages were no longer accessible to web users who were not logged in.

Clare Duffy at CNN.com wrote: “It’s unclear whether this change is a deliberate policy update or a glitch, both of which have been prevalent on Twitter since Musk took over the platform. request comment.”

That’s because Twitter’s communications staff were among the first to be fired by Musk after taking over; Since March, press efforts to reach the company have been answered with a poop emoji.

Musk had to explain what was going on, and Saturday, he tweeted:

“To address the extremes of data collection and system manipulation, we have put in place the following temporary limitations:

“- Verified accounts are limited to reading 6000 articles/day

“- Unverified accounts up to 600 posts/day

“- New unverified account up to 300/day”

The latest Musk clarified that those numbers have been raised to 10,000, 1000, and 500 for each user level.

The besieged social media platform tried to win back advertisers by hiring NBC Linda Yaccarino as Twitter’s CEO but it’s too early to judge whether she’ll be successful.

The newly appointed CEO acknowledged that some “big brands” are no longer using the platform, according to meeting audio obtained by New York Times, and her team will have to engage in “hand-to-hand combat” to convince them to return.
