Suspect in custody after 6 people were killed and several others injured during a 4th of July parade in Illinois
On Monday, 22-year-old Robert “Bobby” Crimo III was taken into custody after he was designated a person of interest in the Highland Park, Illinois shooting that killed six people and left More than two dozen others were injured.
The shooting took place during the July 4 parade and officials say they believe the shots were fired from a nearby rooftop where a large-capacity rifle was later recovered.
ABC News reports that officials say a North Chicago police unit spotted Crimo riding in a matching vehicle they were looking for, a 2010 silver Honda. After stopping the vehicle, Crimo took the lead. officers in a brief chase before surrendering.
Ryan Lerman, who filmed the scene where the suspect was arrested, said,
“He was immediately surrounded by police. They came from both sides of the highway to surround him. It ends with him kneeling and being arrested by the police. It was so bizarre, I didn’t know what I was seeing.”
The parade, commemorating the 4th of July, was completed about 3/4 when gunfire occurred. Make everyone rush to safety. 5 victims, all adults, died at the scene, the 6th victim died at the hospital. One of the victims has been identified as 78-year-old Nicolas Toledo.
About 31 people were taken to NorthShore University Health System. Most of them were wounded by bullets, others were injured in the melee that followed the shootings.
Vice President Kamala Harris spoke out after the tragedy and said:
“Doug and I are praying for the dozens of hospitalized and deceased people today in Highland Park, Illinois. This shooting is an unmistakable reminder that more needs to be done to tackle gun violence in our country.”
