Edgar Berlanga knocks out Jason Quigley four times, winning decisively

Four knockdowns go a long way.

Super-middleweight rival Edgar Berlanga was frustrated by Jason Quigley’s movements for most of the 12th round on Saturday in New York City.

However, he outplayed his opponent and put him on the tarpaulin once in Rounds 3 and 5 and twice more in the final, which left no doubt about who would raise his hand.

Berlanga won decisively with the scores 118-106, 116-108 and 116-108. Boxing Junke also had a win against Berlanga, 115-109.

Quigley (20-3, 14 KOs) had one of the best performances of his career, countering Berlanga’s aggressiveness by sticking and moving from start to finish.

The Irishman even delivered some of the toughest punches of the match, including a left hook that knocked Berlanga’s knee in the 7th round.

In the end, however, Berlanga maintained the pressure, throwing more punches than Quigley and collecting knockouts that brought victory to the home boxer.

The 12th round was brutal, as Berlanga, looking for a knockout, knocked Quigley out with a perfectly straight punch and then forced him to his knees.

However, Berlanga failed to get the job done for the fifth straight game after knocking out his first 16 opponents in the first round.

“That last round is how we’re going to start every first-round match from now on,” Berlanga said.

Berlanga is currently in his strongest position to get a really big fight. Then he and promoter Eddie Hearn suggested a duel with fellow slugger Jaime Munguia.

If the boxer handlers can do that fight, Berlanga won’t have to do any chase.
