MA upgrade technical test Supersport 300
There has been much frustration among competitors and the Supersport 300 team in recent years with the lack of technical supervision in the class. It has led to some people naming the class the ‘Superbike 300’.
I know teams that have even pulled out of the roster in recent years, frustrated that the lack of technical compliance checks makes them think that to compete you have to cheat.
I have addressed these issues on MCNews.com.au before and raised the issue with senior Motorcycling Australia staff.
It looks like things may now have turned a corner in 2022 as a number of Supersport 300 machines have undergone a technical test at the Phillip Island season opener.
Two of the machines inspected and found to be non-compliant were the YZF-R3 machine driven by three-race winner Varis Fleming, and Brodie Gawith, who finished fifth in the lap.
Motorcycles Australia have also shown they are unfazed when it comes to penalties, with results not being stripped of a race, or a category in which they are competing, but they have been disqualified from both results. the six races they competed in Supersport in the 300 and R3 Cup categories at the 2022 season opener. Official results and championship transcripts will be revised as required to reflect disqualification.
This makes drivers aware that cheating needs to stop and the penalties if caught will be severe.
The kids most likely didn’t modify their own bike, and may not even be aware of the fact that their machine broke the rules. I’m not here to try and throw a bucket at a few potentially innocent kids at parties without even knowing what’s been done to their machines. Also make sure they weren’t the only ones in the class using non-compliant machines throughout the weekend, just that these were the only two people caught…

Everyone around the sport I spoke to said that although this is long overdue, they welcome the move and the severity of the penalties being introduced, as this will be the only way best to start bringing about change in the genre.
