Yamaha Motor Europe is pleased to announce that the reigning FIM Supersport world champion and current series leader Dominque Aegerter will participate in the FIM Supermoto World Championship with Yamaha for the 2023 season.

Aegerter enjoyed an absolutely dominating maiden campaign in the WorldSSP class last year and continues to be the driver to beat his Yamaha R6 in 2022. Since arriving at WorldSBK, the Swiss racer demonstrated unrelenting speed and stability, while his work ethic and devotion make him the perfect fit for Yamaha’s WorldSBK lineup next year.

Besides, Aegerter also brings a lot of experience, he made his world debut in 2006 with two appearances at the 125cc Wildcard World Championships in Estoril and Valencia. Over the next few years, he became a regular top 10 finisher and stepped up to Moto2 in 2010.

His first podium came a year later in the Valencia final, with Aegerter going on to add a sixth on the list, including a stunning victory at the 2014 German Grand Prix. ‘Domi’ twice finished in No. year on the Moto2 World Championship rankings and in 2020 he participated in the MotoE World Cup grid.

Aegerter demonstrated an ability to quickly adapt to new machines, coming in third on that year’s ranking. Then, in 2021, he debuted in the WorldSBK paddock, riding for the Ten Kate Yamaha WorldSSP Supported Team in the middle class.

Despite having to switch between MotoE bike and Yamaha R6 throughout the season, Aegerter enjoyed a stellar rookie WorldSSP campaign, picking up 10 wins and 15 podiums en route to the world championship title.

After finishing second at MotoE that year, Aegerter took it one step further in 2022, claiming the MotoGP support title with three wins and 10 podiums. The 31-year-old continues to be the star at WorldSSP this season and is currently leading the championship with 12 wins from 16 races.

Aegerter will race a Yamaha R1 WorldSBK alongside the recently announced Remy Gardner for Team GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK in 2023.

Andrea Dosoli – Director of Yamaha Motor Europe Road Racing

Since entering the field, Dominique has shown he is one of the top talents, and it was clear from a very early age that he was ready for his WorldSBK opportunity. Unfortunately, there’s no chance of giving him that chance in 2022, but when a seat becomes available for 2023 Dominique is the obvious choice to fill.

“Not only did he impress with his speed, racing skill and consistency, but he also demonstrated the determination and drive needed to compete at this level. He has shown throughout his career that he can adapt very quickly to new machinery and we are sure that this ability will pay dividends for him when he steps up to racing the Yamaha R1 WorldSBK. into next season.

“We are looking forward to seeing what he can do. I would also like to thank Kohta Nozane for his contributions over the past two seasons. He has faced many challenges in WorldSBK, but he always does so with a positive attitude. We wish him all the best for the future. “

I am very happy to join Yamaha to win the WorldSBK championship next season. It was a great opportunity for me, and a great reward for being world champion last year and leading this year’s WorldSSP series.

“I look forward to joining the GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team and racing with Remy Gardner, who is a former Moto2 world champion and current MotoGP racer, who will be a strong teammate.

“I can’t wait for my first test on the Yamaha R1 as it is clearly a competitive bike, with Toprak racing it to the world championship last year and in the title hunt again. in this season. I am very happy to have this opportunity and I want to thank Yamaha and the GYTR GRT Yamaha team for believing in me. I will give everything I have next season, but for now my focus is on securing a second consecutive world title in WorldSSP.
