Dom Phillips: British journalist goes missing in Brazil after his local guide receives ‘threats’ | World News

A British journalist has disappeared in one of the most remote corners of the Amazon just days after his guide received threats, according to reports.

Dom Phillips, a contributor to The Guardian in Brazilmissing the same local expert.

The pair were last seen over the weekend in the Javari region of Amazonas state – near the border with Peru.

According to The Guardian, this reporter was accompanied by Bruno Araujo Pereira – a former government official tasked with protecting Brazil’s unrelated tribes.

The newspaper said Mr Pereira had received several threats from loggers and miners in the area.

On Monday, local Indigenous leaders sounded the alarm after the pair disappeared on a reporting mission into the network of rivers around the town of Atalaia do Norte, the entry point to the reserve. Javari exist.

Indigenous group Univaja said the men departed last week by boat to an area known as Lago do Jaburu.

They arrived on Friday, and reportedly began their return trip to Atalaia do Norte on Sunday morning.

The river trip should not have lasted more than a few hours – and a search team was dispatched around 2pm after they failed to arrive.

Local police and the military are expected to be involved in the search.

A spokesman for Guardian News & Media said: “The Guardian is deeply concerned and is urgently seeking information on Mr Phillips’ whereabouts and condition.

“We are in contact with the British embassy in Brazil and the local and national authorities to try to verify the facts as soon as possible.”

Mr. Phillips has covered Brazil for more than 15 years for newspapers such as The Guardian, Washington Post, New York Times and Financial Times.
