A Pit Bull named Dexter loves to play with a stray dog in the neighborhood. At first, Dexter’s father, Derrick, hesitated. But the stray Pit Bull, Derrick later named Doakes, was the perfect companion for Dexter when he was out playing.
Derrick hid Doakes in his garage one day when animal control arrived. He doesn’t want animal control to take him away. Even though Doakes doesn’t have a collar, Derrick is determined to find out if Doakes really has a home because the puppy is so friendly.
Turns out, Doakes wasn’t lost at all. He lives just two houses away. When Derrick returned him to his owner, he explained that they had to put a necklace on him. But they didn’t listen. A few days later, Doakes arrived again without a collar.
Derrick’s annoyance is understandable. Immediately after this incident, Doakes disappeared. Derrick was devastated. He called various shelters and they all said the dog wasn’t there. But anyway, Derrick had feelings and went to a specific shelter.
Doakes stood there, frozen with fear, in one of the cribs. The shelter is filled with hundreds of dogs. It was loud and overwhelming and poor Doakes was petrified. Derrick decided to bring him home. They had to hide Doakes from the neighbors because Derrick wasn’t sure if he was safe. What follows is pure magic! To say Derrick is a hero is an overstatement. What this man will do for his dogs is an inspiration to everyone!
