Will 2021 deal a fatal blow to climate change denial?
Data and extreme weather events are making it harder than ever to ignore our warming world. But climate change denial has also taken on a new form.

From intense heat in North America and Siberia to devastating floods in China and Europe, 2021 will bring worse climate extremes just as scientists have long predicted. Tram cable melted in Portland. A raging river has washed away entire homes in Germany’s lush Ahr Valley wine region. And wildfires have set records globally over the past two years.
For many, recent disasters have transformed human-caused climate change from a distant, theoretical risk into an undeniable reality. And this summer, the United Nations released a landmark climate report, highlighting that avoiding even worse impacts will require rapid and deep cuts in greenhouse gas pollution. But does that mean 2021 will be remembered as the year of climate change denial but dead?
At least one prominent environmental scientist believes so. “I think you’ve seen a seismic shift,” said Jonathon Foley, executive director of Project Drawdown, a nonprofit dedicated to promoting climate solutions. “Much of the conversation right now is really about what we should be doing, not denying that climate change is happening.”

Surveys show growing alarm about climate change. In a 2021 poll by George Mason and Yale universities, 70% of Americans surveyed said they were worried about global warming. A similar poll also showed growing bipartisan support for climate action, with six out of 10 voters voicing support for ambitious clean energy infrastructure and climate legislation. .
“I think our country and our world have changed in important ways,” said Edward Maibach, director of the Center for Communications on Climate Change at George Mason University. “We are now in the inevitable transition to an economy where we no longer emit carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.”
