China climate champion resumes Australian imports, burns record coal

Nothing says green hero like burning coal at a faster rate than any nation has ever burned coal in human history – and still stepping on metal to further push coal mining.

SINGAPORE, January 9 (Reuters) – The growing need to secure energy supplies after the easing of COVID-19 restrictions prompted China to gradually resume Australian coal imports and urged the Domestic mining companies increase output which has reached a record.

The Elevate The unofficial ban on Australian coal imports, which was halted in 2020 due to China’s anger over questions about the origins of COVID, is the clearest sign of the relationship new relationship between them.

The resumption is also a reminder of their economic interdependence as Australian raw materials play an important role in driving China’s export-oriented economy, manufacturers and largest coal consumer in the world.

Prices rise amid Russia sanctions and expect China’s coal demand to soar – 2% more in 2023 than last yearaccording to Wood Mackenzie analysts – after the end of the COVID restrictions raised concerns about energy security.

The Green Party often declares China a climate champion, although they fear China may not be ambitious enough.

Has China done enough to combat the climate crisis?

While it appears committed to renewable energy goals, China’s international commitments fall short of what experts say is necessary.

After decades of economic growth and fossil fuel-based industrialization, China is currently the world’s largest carbon emitter, contributing nearly a third of the world’s greenhouse gases by 2020.

According to UN data, this is also the country most affected by the climate crisis, in terms of population size and number of environmental disasters. Average temperatures and sea levels are rising faster than the global average, and in just one year since Cop26, China has experienced record-breaking floods and heatwaves, leading to severe energy crises. .

The Chinese government has signed off on global climate commitments and is a big driver of renewable energy, but like many countries, experts have raised concerns about the scale of the cuts.

“It’s complicated,” said Trivium analyst Cory Combs. “The general summary is: they are really ambitious, but it may not be enough.”

The Greens seem to have a soft spot for dictators.

If Chiang Kai-shek won the war with Chairman Mao, if the whole of China is as democratic and free as Taiwan, in my opinion there is no way the green people would give them any form to burn so much coal.

But since China is a totalitarian communist, that seems to make them more deliberate when it comes to their relationship with the green movement.

Many green vegetables are hostile to representative democracyand sometimes the illusion that totalitarian regimes like China have the most potential to achieve the climate social reforms they aspire to – even if the green champion wants to be their current China champion seems to be going in the wrong direction, at the moment.

For fairness, Communist China actually tried to cut CO2 emissions by 2021 by imposing coal quotasbut was forced to retreat when people burned through their quotas and their economies ran out of energy.

Despite this defeat, the greens were determined to cling to the idea that dictators have complete freedom to force social change. But even dictators have to deal with popular unrest when problems go awry, as demonstrated by green backup in 2021, and Chinese Communist Party recently surrendered to Covid-locked protesters.
