In the heart of Fremont Street, beneath the iconic yellow neon lights of Denny’s flagship restaurant, Animal Equality stands with a coalition of activists to protest Denny’s connection to the cruelty to animals. Despite a public pledge to phase out the use of “condomins” in its supply chain more than a decade ago, Denny’s hasn’t lived up to its promise.
Dozens of passionate protesters gathered to demand that the corporation uphold its commitment and end the cruelty to these vulnerable animals. Participants hold placards that read “Denny’s: Always Open to Cruelty” and “Stop This Abuse”, while a glowing mobile billboard runs through populated areas Las Vegas’s most populous 19 hours show a pregnant pig in a crate.
What is a pregnancy crate for pigs?
The pregnancy barn is designed to limit the movement of pregnant pigs on an industrial farm. These crates are small, measuring 7 feet by 2 feet and are used to house sows for most of their lives. Sadly, the majority of the 6 million sows in the United States are housed in such crates, which only give them enough space to move a few inches in any direction.
The use of pregnant kennels makes it impossible for pigs to turn around or exhibit any natural behavior. This lack of exercise can lead to enormous stress and frustration in this intelligent and social animal. As a result, the pigs had to bite the metal bars of the barrel or even bang their heads against them to try to cope with confinement.

Animal Equality has been working with corporations to establish measures to protect domestic animals in the US supply chain since 2018. The use of gestational cribs in pig farming has been a controversial issue and now it has been recognized not only by major corporations but also by the US Supreme Court. The court recently upheld California’s Proposition 12, also known as Proposition 12.
Proposition 12 was passed in California in 2018 to establish basic protections for animals on factory farms. The law establishes minimum space requirements for hens, pigs and calves, which are typically caged for most of their lives on farms. Proposition 12 requires that certain egg, pork, and veal products sold in California, including those imported from other states, meet these requirements.
In September 2021, the National Pork Producers Council and the Federation of American Farm Bureaus petitioned the Supreme Court to hear their case against Prop 12. The organizations sued in 2019, arguing that Proposition 12 violated the Commerce Clause of the U.S. Constitution, which regulates states’ ability to regulate commerce beyond their borders.
Last Thursday, May 12th, Supreme Court upholds Prop 12’s constitutionality in a 5-4 majority decision, following oral arguments surrounding the case last October. However, Chief Justice John Roberts and Judges Samuel Alito, Brett Kavanaugh and Ketanji Brown Jackson disagreed.
Revealing the dark past of Denny’s supply chain
Back in 2012, Denny’s publicly committed to removing pregnancy containers from its operations, and joined other popular restaurant chains like Chili’s and Cracker Barrel in this effort. In a statement issued, said Greg Linford, Denny’s former vice president of purchasing and distribution: “Denny’s values its role as a responsible corporate citizen. We will work to buy products from companies that supply non-pregnancy pork in crates and are committed to impacting our suppliers to share a gestational-box-free vision for the future.”
Following a pledge to remove pregnancy crates from its operations, Denny’s released a follow-up statement two years later. In that statement, A Denny official said that removing the crates from the company’s supply chain is “best for our company, for our guests, and for our continued work to improve animal welfare.” In addition, the statement outlines Denny’s efforts to obtain regular updates from its suppliers on the progress being made towards the transition to barrel-free pigsty.
Denny’s has since reported little progress, spark the launch of a nationwide campaign by Animal Equality last January. Animal rights groups are calling on the restaurant chain to “keep its promise to the mother pig”.
The fight to end cruelty is an ongoing one and Animal Equality is leading the way with this powerful campaign urging Denny’s to commit to ending this cruelty. However, despite these efforts, Denny’s has remained silent on the matter. While the road ahead may be long, Animal Equality is dedicated to fighting for animals, a place where they are treated with the respect and dignity they deserve.
