Delphia Out of Four for Attard in 14-Horse Woodbine Oaks


Coach Kevin Attard will have four chances to win the CA$500,000 Woodbine Oaks prize for the third time in a row, one of four bets on the 11-race card on July 23 at Honeysuckle.

Inaugurated in 1956, the chubby classic, which drew 14 3-year-old Canadian ponies weighing 121 pounds over 1/8 mile on synthetic Tapeta surfaces, was the 10th race at 6 p.m. ET. Winning connections will receive $300,000 CA.

Sunday’s card also features a CA$150,000 Disc Trial Bet—an important step in preparation for King’s Plate on August 20—CA$175,000 Connaught Cup Stakes (G2T) and a CA$150,000 Bet (G3).

“Relationships and everyone at the warehouse were looking forward to Delphia’s first race and she certainly didn’t disappoint. It was a professional performance from start to finish,” Attard said. “Going two turns on the first start and doing it well is very impressive.”

Favored in the race with 5-2 odds is Live Oak Plantation’s Tape home page , the four-time Fury Stakes finalist winner for coach Mark Casse. Daughter of Medaglia d’Oro was 2-2-0 in eight starts overall.

“She’s been training really well,” Casse said. “She’s a very talented girl. What matters is whether she can run the distance or not. Her genealogy says she should, but no one knows a mile and an eighth until you do. I think all three of our horses are legitimate competitors.”

Casse also started Team Valor International and Gary Barber’s Fury runner-up Fields of Elysian and the finisher of DJ Stable’s Fury me and my shadow .

The chestnut daughter of Nyquist unranked at age 2, finished third above Gulfstream Park pitch on her debut in April, before breaking her maiden 1 1/16 mile above Monmouth Park May grass.
