DeLorean Alpha5 EV brings gullwing sports car to the future

The rebooted DeLorean Motor Company has unveiled its new electric sports car, the Alpha5. And while it carried the name and wing layout of the original DMC-12, took Marty McFly Back to the Future, it travels to a completely different era.

The Alpha5 will accelerate to 155 mph, according to the company, and it will sprint to 60 mph in 3.0 seconds—or, from that cultural point of view, to 88 mph in 4.4 seconds.

With an estimated drag coefficient of 0.23, DeLorean claims that the car – with a larger 100 kWh battery pack – will offer a range of more than 300 miles. It predicts DC fast charging at around 150 kW.

The Alpha5 ditches the original’s rectangular closed-beam lighting system and cubical cues for crisp, clear horizontal LED lighting. And at about 197 inches long, it’s almost 2.5 feet longer – about the same length as large electric four-doors like the Tesla Model S, Lucid Air or Mercedes EQE.

The interior is designed to be modern but relatively simple in execution. The dash sweeps cleanly around in a continuous arc, with a digital gauge cluster in front of the driver and a touchscreen infotainment system below, in front of a series climate controls and other factors are set to low.

The company says that the Alpha5 will offer seating for four, but even in a provided photo, which can be placed to make the most of it, the rear seats look very small.

In March, marketing director Troy Beetz tell our companion site Advocacy agency, among various additional details, that the Alpha5 will be built on a carbon fiber tube, with a completely new chassis structure. The original version, designed in the 1970s, used a stainless steel body.

At the time, Beetz emphasized that the DeLorean would “be a driver’s car that’s fun to drive.” The original DMC-12 was considered by many to be great looking but unattractive to drive.

According to DeLorean, the gallery of photos provided shows the two exterior paint colors of the production model. As DeLorean announced in April, a premiere version of the Alpha5 will debut at the Pebble Beach Concours D’Elegance in August, when final specs will also be revealed.

DeLorean has said that what is taking shape is entire electric vehicle brand, not just a car. So look for the sequel.
