Deathloop makes NPC AI more aware in new patch

Arkane’s stealth shooter Deathloop is a good game, but perhaps not quite as stealthy as you might expect from the studio behind Dishonored. Even ours Review of Deathloop “stealth is just something that comes before a good fight,” said. Well, you might want to be a little more stealthy right now, as the game’s second major update has arrived and it’s making the NPCs a bit smarter. The patch also addresses some common complaints about PvP Invasion mode.

Update 2 made a lot of tweaks to the AI which, combined, means NPCs will spot you more easily when you’re trying to sneak and try to kill you more when they know you’re there. around. Including:

  • NPCs now react to bullets passing by, such as missed headshots
  • NPCs now react when another person is assassinated nearby
  • NPCs now hear better and react faster to nearby bumps
  • Shot NPCs no longer move to hide if the player gets too close
  • NPCs can now deduce the direction to throw the grenade
  • NPCs no longer stop trying to kill Colt if Julianna uses the Nexus to link him to them
  • Many other minor fixes and improvements to NPC behavior, reactions, pats, and placement

Sure, Colt can hold out in a fight, but that fight could start a lot sooner – and with you in a worse position – if you don’t account for improved behavior. I know our Ed’s thoughts Colt’s weak flaw prevented him from enjoying the action of Deathloopand he’s going to get even more stressed out after this. It’s time to cultivate violence, ma’am.

If you like Deathloop from a different angle, jumping into other players’ games as Julianna to kill Colt in Invasion mode, you might welcome some of the other patch changes. Including:

  • Colt quits game now considered a win for player-controlled Julianna
  • Tagged AFK players
  • Colt players that linger in Colt’s tunnel for too long are automatically tagged and that causes the tunnel door to open.

Julianna punches Colt in the Deathloop screenshot.

Jeremy Peel likes to invade, and Brendy encourage opt-in to be invaded. The players who are still invading out there want changes like this, and here they are.

The patch also increases your chances of hacking into people on your Friends list rather than strangers. So great. Make that murder really sting with an extra dose of betrayal.

To watch Game Update 2 patch notes for information on other changes and fixes, including some UI and controller quality-of-life issues. The developers added, “We continue to listen to community feedback and explore more quality of life and accessibility options for future updates.”
