Deadly flooding in eastern Kentucky

Four of the children found dead in Knott County after the devastating flooding in eastern Kentucky were siblings, their grandmother Brandi Smith told CNN Friday.

Smith is the younger sister of the children’s mother, Amber Smith, and she identifies the four children as Chance, 2 years old; Nevaeh, 4; Riley Jr., 6 years old; and Madison, 8 years old.

According to Smith, who knew of the child’s mother’s death, The family trailer was quickly flooded with water forcing the family to seek shelter on the roof.

“They held them tight. The water was so strong that it washed them away. It pulled them out of their arms,” Smith said when describing how her sister and her partner, Riley Noble, tried to save their babies.

Smith said the couple had to wait several hours to be rescued and, although physically fine, they were still in shock.

She describes her nieces and nephews as sweet, funny and lovable children.

Officials found the bodies of two of the children yesterday and the other two were discovered Friday, Smith added.

Governor Andy Beshear said Friday that the bodies of four missing children in Knott County had been found after the devastating flooding, but did not provide further details.

CNN’s Sharif Paget contributed to this post.
