CWG 2022: Lakshya Sen, PV Sindhu, Kidambi Srikanth row to round before badminton matches

India ace PV Sindhu advanced to the quarterfinals ahead of the women’s singles with a comfortable victory over Fathimath Nabaaha Abdul Razzaq of the Maldives at the Commonwealth Games on Thursday. It will always be a difficult task for Fathimath to face the two-time Olympic medalist, who pocketed the 21-4 21-11 match of the Round of 32 in just 21 minutes.

Sindhu, the final edition’s singles silver medalist, barely broke a sweat as he toyed with her opponent in the first set.

Without adopting an aggressive approach, Sindhu beat Madives Shuttler with his all-around game. She mainly uses her rogue drops to earn points.

In the second game, Fathimath made some initial resistance and was on par with Sindhu until 9/9, as the Indians mostly scored with unforced errors.

But Sindhu regained his composure and led 11-9.

After the break, it was all Sindhu as she ran away with the game with Razzaq picking up just two points, to keep her spot in the round of 16.

Srikanth wins

Outstanding Indian tennis player Kidambi Srikanth defeated Daniel Wanagaliya of Uganda to start his men’s singles campaign and reach the round of 16 at the Commonwealth Games underway in Birmingham on Thursday. In the match in round 32, Srikanth won with a score of 21-9, 21-9. The Indians played extremely dominantly in the game and hardly created opportunities for Wanagaliya to take advantage. As a result, he sealed the match within two consecutive games. Srikanth, who is also a silver medalist at CWG 2018, will play a round of 16 match on Friday.

Notably, Sindhu and Srikanth were members of the Indian mixed badminton team that won the silver medal at CWG 2022.

The Indian badminton team won the silver medal in the mixed group match of the 2022 Commonwealth Games on Tuesday.

The Indian mixed badminton team lost 1-3 to Malaysia and had to win a silver medal. Only Sindhu got the win in the summit clash with Malaysia in the women’s singles match.
