CommonSpirit Health seeks to reduce emissions at a lower cost

It’s installing new LEDs throughout various care locations, such as in this operating room at St. Bernardine in San Bernardino, California, left.

And that is flexible purchasing power to drive supplier change. Around 70% of CommonSpirit’s emissions come from the supply chain. The health system worked with the IV bag supplier to remove a chemical called DEHP, which has been linked to male infertility.

It also partners with its top 30 suppliers to cut its climate footprint in half by 2030.

A tactic it is avoiding, at least for the moment? Invest in credits to offset emissions.

“As a safety net system committed to a mission for the poor and vulnerable, as we move along that path, we will begin to make decisions about carbon offsetting,” Schlenker Sadid. “But that money will compete with other needs, whether it’s charity care or outreach. We’ll do all the hard work before we get to that point.”
