Cobalto: A custom Honda CB750 from sunny Portugal

only one times when we can’t open our inbox without seeing other customization Honda CB750. Honda’s venerable four-cylinder UJM was one of the early favorites of the new wave of customization scene—and although its popularity has waned somewhat, it is still loved by manufacturers. Custom worldwide favorite.

This custom Honda CB750 is testament to Seven-Fifty’s enduring appeal. It comes from Maria’s motorcycle in Portugal, and it is brimming with the laid-back coastal style and vibrant colors for which the workshop is known. And if you take a closer look, you’ll also spot a host of modern upgrades.

Shop owner Luis Correia said: “This motorcycle was ordered by one of our special customers, for whom we had previously built a 125 cc motorcycle. “He was a young man who had just started riding motorcycles, and now, many years later, he has contacted us to build him a bike with a bigger engine that is also daring and more unique.”

Maria started with an extremely neat 1993 model CB750 F2 sponsor. Thanks to its condition and legendary Honda reliability, the engine needed nothing more than a quick retest. The only important work of the engine takes place on the outside, where Maria cleans and polishes the lids for a better-looking finish than new.

The OEM airbox has been scrapped and replaced with not four but two K&N filters. Each oval filter houses two carburetors and each has a chrome-plated cap that perfectly complements the new engine. The muscular 4-in-4 exhaust system is completely custom-made and is the perfect match for the CB750’s engine block.

Under the hood, Maria removed all of the CB’s wiring and started over. A new wire loom is now running by Motogadget the popular Mo.unit controller, which keeps things clean and simple.

Luis and his team wanted to bring the handling of a 30-year-old CB750 into modern times, so they assembled the entire front end from a Yamaha MT-09. The Yamaha upside-down fork, yoke, lever, brake and even front fender have all been tuned to suit the Honda. Maria has revised the fenders to create a more classic feel and upgraded the brakes with a pair of Brembo discs.

An Öhlins shock absorber piggybacks on the rear, set up specifically for the car’s owner. The 17-inch tethered wheels come from Jonich in Italy and feature polished alloy rims, shod with modern Metzeler Roadtec Z6 tires.

Shifting the focus to the bodywork, Maria removed everything but the original Honda fuel tank. “We decided that the original shape was good, except for the ‘wings’ attachment for the side flaps,” says Luis. We decided to remove them, resulting in a tank with simpler and cleaner lines.”

The CNC machined fuel cap is also retrofitted and the side caps are newly shaped from aluminum. Maria also built a new battery box, license plate holder and mounting points for the custom saddle.

The stout cafe racer saddle was requested by the customer. Maria shortened the subframe to accommodate it, then finished it off with a slight jerk backwards. Beige suede might seem like an odd choice for a motorcycle seat, but there’s no denying that it pairs well with the subtle yellow accents in CB’s new paint job.

The paint job even extends to the headlights; an upgraded part of Harley-Davidson. At the rear, the cockpit is equipped with a new steering wheel and a range of Motogadget accessories including a speedometer, handles and mirrors. The ignition system has been moved to the side of the car and small Motogadget LED turn signals are tucked away at both ends.

Maria has nicknamed the bike ‘Cobalto’ (the Portuguese word for Cobalt) as a nod to its blue base paint. We’re not sure whether to call this a bubbly cafe racer or a beach cruise street tracking. But one thing we do know is that it’s definitely fun to ride—especially when the sun is shining in your face and the salty smell of the Atlantic is in the air.
