Cliff Mass’s Weather Blog: Eclipse Disappointment

We are now within 72 hours of Monday’s eclipse and forecast models are in line.

Unfortunately, the situation I discussed in my blog on March 28 will occur: dense clouds cover much of the path of the total eclipse, especially in Mexico and Texas, where many people will come.

Again, a map showing the overall route is shown below. From Mazatlan to Dallas to Columbus to northern Maine.

The cloud forecast at 18:00 UTC April 8 (near the time of the eclipse) from the latest US GFS model run is shown below. The European Center’s forecast for the same period is also shown.

They are almost identical. A band of clouds follows the eclipse area in Mexico and Texas/Oklahoma is covered in clouds. The best bet is northern Maine. There may be some breaks/thinning points in the cloud zone but the situation is not favorable.

Here in the Northwest, western Washington will be cloudy, but since we only get 20% sunshine anyway, that’s hardly worth it in any case.
