While the coronavirus pandemic is quietly wreaking havoc on the diving tourism industry, draining people’s savings accounts and causing general distress, it is also wreaking havoc on supply chains around the world, contributes to a global semiconductor shortage that is threatening other businesses — from auto companies to medical device makers to smartphone makers.
The latest victim is Sony Japan, which has apologized on its website to consumers that it “will temporarily stop taking orders from our distributors and customers at the Sony store for some models are in scarce supply”. The company cited delays in “components procurement” as a result of the global semiconductor shortage.
The affected products are a6400, a6100 (black only), a7 II, PXW-Z190 (4K professional camcorder) and ECM-B1M (shotgun mic). Released in 2019, the a6100 and a6400 are popular models among underwater photographers, while the a7 II was announced in 2014 but remains a current offering for those wanting a camera. full-frame images are highly operable but don’t bother. have the latest model.
It looks like orders made through November 19, 2021 can be delivered, but there may be delays. Sony did not say when it expected to resume taking orders but assured consumers that they would be notified when it did.
