BEIJING — China’s population will shrink by 2022, the National Bureau of Statistics said on Tuesday.
According to Yi Fuxian, a critic of China’s one-child policy and author of “Big Country With an Empty Nest,” this is the first decline since the early 1960s.
The Census Bureau says mainland China’s population, excluding foreigners, has fallen by 850,000 by 2022 to 1.41 billion. The country reported 9.56 million births and 10.41 million deaths in 2022.
In 2021, the population of China slowest growth in history. Mainland China’s population, excluding foreigners, grew by 480,000 to 1.41 billion by the end of 2021, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.
Data shows that the number of new births in the mainland fell 13% in 2021 to 10.62 million. According to the data, in 2020, the number of new births has decreased by 22%.
Particularly over the weekend, Chinese health authorities revealed nearly 60,000 deaths from Covid in Chinese hospitals from December 8, 2022 to January 12, 2023. The majority were elderly, and the median age of death was 80.3 years, authorities said.
