We recently made some changes to one of my favorite rooms in the house: children’s room!
Earlier this year, Domino approached us about implementing a kids room feature and the bathroom. (This feature went live on Dominoes this month — you can see it here!) We’ve kept the room private for the past few months and made a few updates to it in the meantime. I’m happy to share what we update with you!
An update on the kids room design we made in 2022
The main changes we make to the kids room in 2022 are adding a new red spotlight on top (buy at a local architectural antique store) and add art to the walls.
Art in particular was a missing piece that I was really happy to find. The pieces that we added really complement the design elements already in this room.
How I Choose Artwork in the Children’s Room
Art is a big part of this room coming together for basic design reasons. I considered several key things when deciding on art for this space. Here are a few of the things I keep in mind:
first. I wanted to balance the kids’ personalities and what they like with art that complements the existing design of the room. I wanted to use art to further create a room that encourages play and makes them feel special.
2. One of my big goals is to find artwork that balances the background. Face-to-face, striped textures can feel really busy and it can be a lot to look at. I wanted to bring in art to help break that mold.
3. Aesthetically, I’m looking for large-scale, impactful works graphic in nature and can visually divide large spaces.
3 Tips for Choosing Children’s Room Art (Or Art for Any Playspace)
If you’re choosing art for a kid’s room (or any play space) in your own home, here are a few things I recommend you keep in mind.
1. Review the story.
I like to find pieces that can conjure up a story about their history or supposed meaning. This art form is especially fun to talk to with kids. One of the things we brought into the room was a lunar explorer and looks both classic and futuristic.
2. Look for interesting shapes.
I love the art of highlighting interesting, unexpected shapes. It seems to spark the kids’ imaginations and it also makes a design statement.
3. Complement your existing palette.
When it comes color in design, I find that children’s rooms tend to have more specific and whimsical colors this way. We selected a few pieces of art for their space based primarily on the color palette and how it plays with the greens, yellows, blues and reds already in the room.
