Polestar 5 is ready to debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed

Polestar could have started life as Volvo‘S sports car racing but the company has grown into a unique, interesting company tram producer. The Polestar 1 and Polestar 2, sold in the United States, are gorgeous cars, and the Polestar 3 isn’t far off. The automaker is gearing up for its fifth vehicle, the Polestar 5, to debut in Goodwood Festival of Speed. The sleek four-door GT will show off its incredibly powerful electric powertrain on a hill climb at the event.

The car is equipped with a new electric powertrain that includes a rear electric motor with 800 volt architecture and a powerful front motor. Polestar says it’s targeting 884 horsepower and about 664 pound-feet of torque with the setup, so acceleration should be quick.

Jörg Brandscheid, Polestar CTO and Head of R&D, said that the system “will set a new brand standard for our high-performance cars. Combining powerful electric motor engineering capabilities with advances in lightweight platform technology is leading to truly stunning driving cars. Polestar’s UK research and development team has developed a unique bonded aluminum frame to work with the new platform and Polestar says the package offers high rigidity along with light weight.

As the name suggests, the 5 is Polestar’s fifth car. It is scheduled for release in 2024, after the Polestar 3 and Polestar 4 SUV. The first version of the Polestar 5 appeared in early 2020 with the Precept concept. That car has roof-mounted LiDAR and other wild design choices, but most of its shape and detailing seems to have been carried over to the Polestar 5.

The vehicle camouflaged in Polestar’s teaser image has essentially the same shape as the Precept, including the deeply engraved side panels. The rear end of the 5 has a more traditional taillight and bumper shape. Although the polygonal camo wrap makes it difficult to see the exact shape, this car is clearly going to be eye-catching.

The Goodwood Festival of Speed is a great opportunity for automakers to show off their latest and greatest products. Bentley will launch the new Flying Spur S at the event, running in the same First Look category as Polestar 5. Flashy supercar and wild classic racers garner headlines at the hillclimb event, but the EV presence is growing. The Volkswagen The ID.R electric race car dominated the track in 2019, breaking records as it raced up the hill.
