Chevrolet Silverado EV rated at 450 miles in work truck form

The Chevrolet Silverado EV 2024 will achieve an EPA-estimated range of 450 miles in base truck (WT) form, the automaker said Friday in a press release, calling it “an estimate.” formality”.

Aimed at fleet buyers, the Silverado EV WT will be available in both 450-mile and 350-mile versions. Chevy says it is still on track to begin deliveries of the WT models in the spring of 2023 as scheduled, meaning the first deliveries should take place soon. The Silverado EV RST First Edition model aimed at retail customers will launch this fall. The Silverado EV (and its GMC Sierra EV sibling) will be built at General Motors’ Orion assembly plant, which currently builds the Chevy Bolt EV and EUV, with full production scheduled for next year 2024.

GM told Green Car Reports it doesn’t yet have specs to share on what battery size those numbers will relate to — numbers that will need to be released at the time of delivery. The GMC Hummer EV gets what GM sees as a 329-mile range from the EPA cycle tests on its 205 kwh package. Given the weight of the Hummer EV, which is beyond what is considered a light vehicle, that’s not official yet.

The Silverado EV has the same “textured sandwich” construction as the GMC Hummer EV, as well as a version of that truck’s Watts to Freedom (WTF) mode called Wide Open Watts (WOW) that allows power up up to 664 hp and more than 780 lb-ft of torque from the dual-motor powertrain in select models, with 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds. Chevy previously cited a maximum towing capacity of 10,000 pounds, with a payload of up to 1,300 pounds.

The Silverado EV also brings back the center door of the Chevy Avalanche, along with a PowerBase system and a large rear trunk with up to 10 power outlets and 10.2 kW of power—beating the Ford F-150 Lightning’s 9.6 kW. DC fast charging at 350 kw also beats Ford, but it remains to be seen how Chevy’s is cold weather charging performance measures up.

Chevy initially said the Silverado EV WT models would start at $39,900, but hasn’t recently given an update on pricing. Ford has repeatedly raised the price of Lightning, to the point where the Lightning Pro model is fleet-oriented now start over $60,000. Strong demand for electric trucks could prompt Chevy to do the same.
