Canoo delivers light tactical vehicle to US military

Canoo on Thursday announced delivery of a prototype truck to the US Army, which shows what a production off-road vehicle from the EV startup could look like.

Called the Light Tactical Vehicle (LTV), the contract-completed electric truck was awarded to Canoo in July 2022, according to the company’s press release. The single prototype is being used for analysis and demonstration purposes, which will likely determine whether the Army commits to placing orders for production versions.

The LTV has a front-cabin configuration similar to the electric vans and pickup trucks that Canoo intends to build for civilian use, but with a conversion platform behind the cabin that allows the truck to be used as a vehicle. pickup or sleeper van. According to Canoo, it has enough space for standard-size plywood or things like building materials or tactical gear.

According to Canoo, the all-wheel drive system delivers 600 horsepower, and both the battery pack and the passenger compartment are protected by light Kevlar armor. However, the company did not say how large the windshield and side windows of the LTV are bulletproof.

More suitable for civilian applications may be chassis modifications. Air springs, enhanced suspension and 32-inch all-terrain tires increase off-road capability over the standard Canoo. They also seem to be easily applied to those civil vehicles to create electric all-terrain vehicles.

Canoo looked like it was about to fail, but it was revived by a Big Walmart orders for 4,500 electric trucks earlier this year—more interest since then. In October, Canoo announced an order from fleet management company Zeeba for at least 3,000 electric vehicles.

After some major changes to its business plan, Canoo has moved from California to Central America and now has a plan to build your vehicle in Arkansas first, before moving to the planned “Mega Micro” plant in Pryor, Oklahoma by the end of 2023. Canoo had previously discussed contract manufacturing by VDL Nedcar in the Netherlands.

Production locations aren’t the only thing Canoo has changed. It originally planned a subscription model, but it has shifted to focusing on the fleet. Its foundation and foundations—including a battery structure with Panasonic cells — seems to have continued in these moves.

Canoo isn’t the only one getting the Army interested in electric vehicles. General Motors also worked on a version of the GMC Hummer EVcalled the “Electric Light Reconnaissance Vehicle”, which will bring the Hummer brand back to its military roots.
