Build data systems quickly and at scale

Healthcare organizations must be able to build and scale their data systems quickly if they need to communicate with multiple systems within their hospital or between other hospitals.

During a presentation at HIMSS22 APAC, Stella Ramette, Sales and Customer Relations Manager at InterSystems Southeast Asia, shared how their organization is helping healthcare and hospital providers Harness data to improve insights and foresight using HL7 FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources), a standard for healthcare data exchange.

“You need to make sure it’s fast and easy to learn and [be adopted]and that you can future-proof it,” she said of building data systems.

It must also have interrupts or detailed data, she emphasized. “Most of the time your data is in transcription notes because you need to make sure you can get context out of the scanned document. It’s not about digitization, it’s about data fiction. You need data insights, so you need detailed data.”

One provider that can help sort, organize and integrate data into analytics is InterSystems, she says.

For Ramette, what makes them unique is having a two-way approach to data mining. Its data platform not only cleans and aggregates data, but can also send data back to sources, she said. “The ability to make announcements, to send information back to the source system is key. And that’s what really makes us unique.”

Ignition FHIR

When “activating” data insights with FHIR, Ramette recommends cleaning and managing the data first. Organizations can also co-create with vendors such as InterSystems, who also offer FHIR workshops.

She notes that there must be consistency in every small effort in this process.

“I am [already] in the right direction because FHIR is the right format to use to send data and share it. But for this to stand out, it’s not just the government that needs to do well. Every clinic, every area and [every] the hospital needs to do things the right way for us to make sense,” she said.

“I hope that not only you will burn FHIR [but you’re also] will create beautiful ‘fireworks’ in the future,” Ramette said at the end.
