BMW X1 M35i: The brand’s hottest small SUV priced in Australia

The BMW X1 M35i xDrive will be the most expensive member of the domestic small SUV line, priced at $90,900 in advance on-road costs.

That makes it $6000 more expensive than the current flagship, the electric iX1 xDrive30.

BMW says it will roll out the hotter X1 later this year.

M35i xDrive packs a 2.0 liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine manufacture 233kW power (@ 5750-6500rpm) and 400Nm torque (@2000-4500rpm) in combination with all-wheel drive.

Notably, we get a higher output tone, while the European market has a less powerful 221kW tone.

The M35i uses a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, along with a mechanical limited-slip differential.

The automatic transmission has paddle shifters and pulling the lever to the left for at least a second activates M Sport Boost mode and shifts the powertrain and chassis into the sportiest mode.

In the Australian market, the new M35i has the most power of any petrol X1 ever sold here, even more so than the old six-cylinder xDrive35i.

BMW claims a 0-100km/h time of 5.4 seconds and a combined WLTP cycle fuel consumption of between 8.0 and 8.5 liters per 100km.

The new M Compound brake system will be available in Australia in early 2024 for $3000. It has four-piston brakes, fixed brake calipers at the front and single-piston, floating brake calipers at the rear.

Adaptive M suspension is standard equipment, with mechanically adjustable, frequency-selective dampers.

The M35i is 15mm lower than the other X1s and is also distinguished by four exhaust outlets – a design feature borrowed from BMW’s M lineup – along with a unique front fender, rear spoiler and side extensions.

The grille also uses double crossbars, another M design cue.

The free M Sport Pro package adds glossy Shadowline exterior trim and a Shadowline treatment to the exterior lighting, along with electrically adjustable M Sport seats with illuminated M logos, driver memory and M seat belts.

The package also includes M Sport brakes with red brake calipers. If you want to upgrade to the unique braking system, the M Sport Pro package is required.

This pack comes with a choice of either a black Alcantara/Sensatec upholstery with blue stitching or a Coral/Red-Black Veganza upholstery.

If you don’t choose the M Sport Pro package, you can choose from Vernasca leather upholstery in Black, Oyster or Mocha colors. Hexacube Pale Aluminum inlay details are fitted inside the cabin, as are the anthracite ceiling panels, M pedal and door sill trim, and M-specific graphics for the display.

The X1 M35i is one of the first BMWs to feature Android-based OS 9, which BMW says “offers an innovative menu structure that takes cues from consumer electronics”.

Features a new home screen design and QuickSelect functionality, allowing you to access key functions without having to go through submenus.

The X1 also features a built-in e-SIM. Software updates can be performed remotely.
