BMW revealed that it has begun to launch a new version iDrive 8.5 (with BMW OS 8.5) on additional models. As the German automaker explained earlier this year, iDrive 8.5 is a software upgrade for the cars that were originally equipped with the relatively new iDrive 8 (with BMW Operating System 8) launched in 2016. 2020.

It should be noted that iDrive 8.5 is not the latest version of the company’s infotainment system, as that honor goes to iDrive9 (with BMW Operating System 9). It’s a bit confusing, but the gist of it is that iDrive 8.5 is a Linux-based system for BMW models using an older chipset, while iDrive 9 is based on Google’s Android Automotive Operating System (AAOS) running on hardware found in newer models such as the third generation X1.

Both systems work with the BMW Curved Display and feature an almost identical user interface that includes a newly designed home screen, sleeker graphics, and simpler menus. There is also a QuickSelect system designed to minimize driver input on the go by displaying the right information in the right places to help with the selection and operation of technical functions and services. Digital becomes more intuitive and comfortable.

In addition, the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant will be enhanced with more functions in the summer, allowing drivers to use their voice to activate/deactivate vehicle functions, adjust seat position sit and explain to them previously unused functions. While they may be very similar in appearance, iDrive 8.5 misses out on certain features – like a dedicated app store (Customer Digital Ecosystem) – that are only available with iDrive 9.

Models that will be equipped with iDrive 8.5 from the factory include the 7 Series, iX and i4 built from July 2023 as well as the X5, X6, X7 and XM manufactured from August 2023. BMW indicates that the M models will also receive iDrive 8.5, but without the new graphical interface.

Meanwhile, current models eligible to receive iDrive 8.5 through an over-the-air (OTA) update include the 7 Series (manufactured from July 2022), iX (built since July 2022), and iX March 2023) as well as the X5, X6, X7 and XM (manufactured from April 2023).
