BMW Motorsport GmbH was founded in 1972 with the idea of uniting all of BMW’s motorsport activities under one roof and building high performance racing cars and racing engines for motor racing. .
The BMW 3.0 CSL (CSL = Coupe Sport Light Construction) made its debut as the first race car by BMW Motorsport GmbH in 1973.
The BMW 3.0 CSL made its debut in the European Touring Car Championship in the 1973 season, and it featured the team’s uniform appearance in three BMW Motorsport colors of blue, purple and red on a white background. snow. day. This color scheme in the updated version Blue – Dark Blue – Red determines the appearance of the BMW M logo and the BMW M vehicles to this day.
The legendary color scheme can be found on the first BMW M cars developed on the road in the second half of the 1970s and also characterizes later race cars and their success. For example, in 1978 the M1 super sports car and from 1980 onwards, the Formula 1 racing car with which Nelson Piquet won the Formula 1 World Championship in 1983.
But not only since 1972, and not only in BMW automobiles, has the BMW brand been driven to win. Prominent successes and innovations in motorsport also stem from motorsport. And in the years that followed, RR left his unmistakable mark at the Tourist Trophy with subsequent victories.
And in 1976, exactly 37 years later, Helmut Dähne and Hans Otto Butenuth celebrated fifth place in the Production TT. In this up to 1000 cc category, they placed the fastest time with their BMW R 90 S, but due to the handicap applied there, they were listed in fifth place in the classification. after two 250cc and two 500cc. With the fastest time, however, this fifth place was celebrated as a victory.
The BMW M color scheme is also shown on off-track BMW motorcycles. On BMW GS factory bikes, for example, where Hubert Auriol and Gaston Rahier dominated the Paris-Dakar Cycling Championship in the early 1980s.
The M RR 50 Years M model carries this historic sports DNA within it. This particular motorcycle can only be ordered between May 21 and November 30, 2022.
