Beware of ‘RatMilad’ malware! It can secretly record your phone calls


‘RatMilad’ malware was recently operated by hackers. It can be used for cyber espionage and blackmail.

A new one malware was reported to have been operated by hacker and it is spying on victims’ conversations, stealing data and accessing private corporate systems. Dubbed the RatMilad malware, it is attacking phones in the Middle East, and is used to track target users and steal data. As reported by BleepingComputer, this spyware was first discovered by mobile security company Zimperium. They say this new RatMilad spyware works as a Remote Access Trojan can steal a variety of data and spy on the chats of the victim. The company reports that the malware is being used for cyber espionage, extortion, to eavesdrop on victims’ conversations or even record phone calls.

“Similar to other mobile spyware we’ve seen, data stolen from these devices can be used to gain access to private company systems, blackmail victims, etc,” the company reported. It also says that Spyware can create victim notes, download any stolen documents, and gather intelligence about other crimes.

The most dangerous part of this spyware is that it is distributed through a fake phone spoofing app called “NumRent.” When installed, the app asks for permissions and then uses them to download the malicious RatMilad spyware. Furthermore, the cybercriminals have even created a website to promote the app through Telegram and other social media platforms to trick users into downloading and installing it. Once installed on the victim’s Android smartphone, RatMilad hides behind a VPN and collects data on the device itself as well as contacts, call logs, text messages, GPS location data, etc. of the user.

According to a blog post from Zimperium, the RatMilad malware has been viewed more than 4,700 times with over 200 external shares.

It can even delete and steal files, modify app permissions, and even use the infected device’s microphone to record audio and eavesdrop on victims’ conversations.
